Péter Szarka: OXIMORON IDYLL

On the occasion of the annual Bloomsday festivities in Szombathely, the Irokéz Gallery hosted the solo exhibition of Péter Szarka entitled Oxymoron Idyll, who first presented his newest cycle of paintings in acb in the autumn of 2023. Szarka complemented his series with brand new works of different scale in the meantime.
The paintings of Péter Szarka are characterized as much by powerful, instinctive painterly expressiveness as by a conceptuality that reinforces the variability and modularity of the works and maximizes the role of chance in their creation. The revelative explosion-like freedom of the art Szarka doesn’t originate only from the size and the format of his new pieces, but from the fact that the artist bravely and consequently continues his program based on maximum expressivity. The paintings of Szarka prove again, what overwhelming power the level of freedom can have, if no such things exist as errors. His painting still isn’t about concentrated grand gestures, and his art doesn’t only mediate the message of the the artist being unerring, as Szarka deconstructs and eliminates his own gestures and artistic ego in a broader sense through the simple means of rotating the variable parts of his paintings.
Péter Szarka’s art is based on the integration of pairs of opposites: his surfaces can accommodate the most lasting and also timeless technique of egg tempera, which has been used for centuries on panel paintings, while at the same time silicone and spray paint make their mark on his surfaces as the most prominent attributes of our time. Yet perhaps the most enduring role in Szarka’s painting is that of the axonometric representation of polygons, the exceptionally glowing colors, the integration of errors, and randomness, which was already visible and tangible on his previous digital images produced with 3D softwares.
